Have you always wondered about growing plants in containers but not known where to start?
There’s a chance to learn with ‘The Secrets of Growing Plants in Containers’, run by Kaipatiki Community Facilities Trust and horticulture expert Reg Lewthwaite. Each one-off session is free, and all materials are supplied. There’s even a free sausage sizzle, as well as a colouring-in station for the kids.
Where and when ‘The Secrets of Growing Plants in Containers’ is run is organised to suit Northcote residents. “We’re taking it to the community, rather than them coming to us. We’re keeping it basic and short and simple,” says Midi Rapana from KCFT.
Reg says he’s tried to choose “fail-safe” vegetables such as parsley and fancy lettuce. He explains, “a plant in your house makes you feel good” and “if you look after it, it looks after you”.
The course covers taking care of two types of easy-to-grow plants – vegetables and “amenity” plants – ones that are nice to look at. Participants get to keep them afterwards.
Keep an eye on the KCFT Facebook page for the next event, or request one for you and your neighbours.
