Northcote’s journey began as part of The Auckland Housing Programme; a Government response to ease the housing shortage across Auckland City. However, the challenge was much more than just finding space to put up houses. We've redeveloped Northcote from the whenua up, as many of Auckland’s streets, parks and essential services (in the pipes underground) were built more than 50 years ago and need renewing.
This was the perfect opportunity to reimagine and renovate this neighbourhood to ensure it meets the needs of modern families and their lives. With a restored awa, Northcote is a great place to live with improved schools, infrastructure and amenities like parks, playgrounds, streets, stormwater and wastewater systems. A new town centre is in progress to offer more usable and welcoming public places and essential services.
Kāinga Ora has led the Northcote Development team, increasing the number and quality of homes available to residents to buy or rent, as well as social homes for Aucklanders who need assistance.
