Northcote’s town centre was buzzing on 21 February 2026, as hundreds of people gathered to celebrate Lunar New Year in one of the most vibrant community days the area has seen.
Led by the Northcote Central Business Association, with support from the Local Board, Auckland Council, and many local organisations, the event transformed the town centre into a colourful celebration of culture, connection, and community pride. Stalls, performances, and activities brought together residents, families, and visitors from across Northcote.
We were proud to take part with a stall alongside Northcote Together, a volunteer-led community group. Face painting and paper fan making were a hit with families, creating a welcoming space for people to stop, connect, and enjoy the festivities.
Local performers were a highlight of the day, with a solo singer performing alongside her Chinese Opera group, a waiata shared by a guest in full Māori attire, and an energetic local dance group delighting the crowd.

The event also provided an opportunity for meaningful conversations. We connected with Kāinga Ora tenants, residents, local organisations, council staff, and community leaders, all contributing to a strong sense of belonging. Visitors also learned more about the Northcote Development, including the redevelopment of around 1,700 homes, now 60% complete, with all Kāinga Ora homes and infrastructure finished.
More than a celebration, Lunar New Year showcased what’s possible when a community comes together. It reflected a vibrant, connected Northcote — and reinforced our commitment to building not just homes, but a great place to live.
