The Kāinga Ora team recently joined Mana Whenua, local board members, councilors, Auckland Council representatives, project partners, and community members at a dawn blessing to mark the completion of the final section of Northcote's Te Ara Awataha greenway through the Northcote town centre.

Delivered by Auckland Council's Auckland Urban Development Office (AUDO), this final stage completes a significant milestone in the transformation of Northcote. It builds on earlier sections of the greenway delivered by Kāinga Ora alongside the neighbouring schools, collectively bringing to life a shared vision for a connected and resilient community.

Te Ara Awataha is a landmark partnership between Kāinga Ora and Auckland Council that has restored the historic Awataha Stream, which had remained hidden beneath stormwater pipes for more than seventy years. Through the daylighting of the stream and the creation of a vibrant greenway, this project has re-established an important natural feature at the heart of Northcote while enhancing the area's environmental, cultural, and recreational values.

The completion of Te Ara Awataha demonstrates the impact that can be achieved when local and central government work together towards a common goal. The greenway provides a high-quality public amenity, improves walking and cycling connections across Northcote, and delivers important flood resilience benefits that will support the community for generations to come.
