Learning essential life skills doesn’t have to be serious - the Northcote Amazing Race proved it can be fun, active, and community-focused.
Recently, Northcote residents came together for a high-energy event combining fitness, teamwork, and an important goal: building emergency preparedness.

Participants moved around the neighbourhood completing a series of engaging challenges, from obstacle courses to puzzles and firefighter-inspired activities. Each station was designed to build practical skills and confidence for real-life emergency situations, while keeping the day fun and inclusive for all ages.
A standout feature was the involvement of Northcote Together, who encouraged neighbours to connect, share skills, and recognise how those relationships support communities during times of crisis.
The event was made possible through strong collaboration, with support from organisations including Kaipātiki Community Facilities Trust, Kaipātiki Project, Auckland Emergency Management, Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ), and Northcote Intermediate School.

“What a buzz to see whānau, friends and neighbours getting out and about, working together to take part in a range of emergency readiness challenges across the area. There was a real sense of energy and connection throughout the day, with plenty of excitement at the finish line and a good sharing of stories over a sausage sizzle. The event also created a valuable opportunity for Auckland Emergency Management (AEM) staff to connect with the community, with plenty of talk about how whānau can prepare for future emergency events. What a fun day!”

Feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, with many praising the creative challenges, welcoming atmosphere, and opportunity to explore Northcote in new ways. Beyond the fun, attendees gained useful knowledge such as preparing emergency grab bags and responding to flooding - skills they can take back to their households and communities.
As one attendee shared, the event captured “the very core of resilience” - people connecting, helping each other, and building skills together before a crisis occurs.
With strong community turnout and enthusiastic feedback, it’s no surprise people are already asking when the next Amazing Race will be held.
